Frequently asked questions
How much is a rial in Morocco?
In most of Morocco 20 rial make 1 dirham, so one rial is 0.05 dirhams. In the north (Tangier, Tetouan) and the Rif it works differently: 2 rial make 1 dirham.
What is a santim?
It is one hundredth of a dirham: 100 santim make 1 dirham. People also call it "franc" or, in French, "centime".
What about the doro?
It is another word for rial. In Oujda and eastern Morocco 20 doros make 1 dirham; in the Rif, 2 doros make 1 dirham.
Why do Moroccans count in rial if the currency is the dirham?
It is a habit inherited from old currencies that is still alive in everyday speech, especially in souks, taxis and markets. Written prices are in dirhams; spoken prices are often in rial.
